Welcome to Florida Presbyterian Homes’ first blog! We are excited to provide our residents, staff, potential residents, friends and family with an easy way to keep up with progress on our beautiful campus. Like a journal or scrapbook, we will provide regular updates, pictures and maybe some juicy details!
As many of you know, we are in the process of planning a new community center. The first few blog posts will help bring you up to speed. It has been an exciting endeavor, and we hope you join us for the ride! Let’s bring you up to speed…
New Community Center Part 1
The year was 2011. A group of staff and board members attended a LeadingAge conference. “Community wellness” was all the buzz and EVERYONE was building fabulous new wellness centers. “Is this how you keep seniors healthy?” our group asked themselves. “Just build a new gym?” What do our residents really need? What will future residents – those demanding baby boomers – expect? How can we do this better than everyone else? Our current community center on the north end of campus is sorely outdated. The board of directors’ strategic planning committee decided to move forward.
In the fall of 2011, planning charrettes were conducted with city officials, local architects, neighbors, residents and staff. It was determined that this new center should literally be in the center, the center of the campus, with a lake view for everyone. View a post-charette concept drawing.
Following the charrettes, the Board approved programming of the Lake Hunter Village/Town Center concept, to be located at the site of “Motel 6” (the sixplex apartments) and house various amenities, which may include exercise, a bistro, woodworking, painting, ceramics, plazas, card room, pool, etc.
