History

The Story of Florida Presbyterian Homes (FPH) begins with a pastor calling on a winter visitor in the Lakeland Terrace Hotel in early 1955. The visitor, Erwin Howland had just come out of the hospital, was past 80, and was tired of hotel living. He wanted a place more like home. With his gift and contributions from others, the project was underway. A six-room house was purchased to provide a home and care for 10 residents. Over the years we have grown to serve 300 residents on a 48 acre lakeside campus.

The history of the Homes is a story about the extraordinary people who have resided here and the dedicated service of the men and women on staff. "Our residents think of this as their home, not an institution," were the words of our founder, Dr. Monte Johnson. FPH has never been an institution. It has always been just what it says it is, a home, where older adults live and are supported in a loving Christian community.
